Health Plan Alliance, one of the nation’s leading organizations for provider-sponsored and independently-owned health plan collaboration, will host a Value Visit September 13-15th in Dallas, TX focused on risk management and cybersecurity.  In a recent survey by the American Health Lawyers Association and Bloomberg Law, half of respondents said, “cyberattacks, including malicious codes and ransomware, and employee negligence and insider threats are top vulnerabilities” for health care organizations. Recent trends also demonstrate that health plans are particularly vulnerable to data breaches experienced by their vendors.  Given the number of recent incidences, the Alliance found contract risk management, and vendor oversight and auditing to be at the top of health plan leadership’s priorities.

This Alliance Value Visit will bring stakeholders with responsibility for enterprise risk management together alongside those managing data security and teams conducting oversight of vendors, most specifically business associates as defined by HIPAA. Day one of the Value Visit will dive deep into enterprise risk management. Health plans that are required to file an ORSA summary report will have the opportunity to participate in a series of health plan-led roundtable discussions focused on the most challenging elements of the process, including the risk identification cycle, stress testing, the risk mitigation documentation process and how ERM fits into an organization’s structure.  Attendees will also have meaningful discussion time to focus specifically on the risks inherent in managing vendor relationships. Discussion will cover a wide range of topics from managing contracts to ensuring vendors adhere to security and privacy requirements.

Attendees will also participate in a series of sessions focused on data security and how health plans can ensure their HIPAA efforts keep pace with new threats.  Experts agree that the conversation is not “if,” but “when” a health care organization will experience a cyber-attack.  Attendees will learn how to prepare for, live through, and recover from a breach. Health plans must also decide how to best mitigate these risks. By the conclusion of the Value Visit, attendees will be better equipped to examine insurance options and implement processes to ensure confidentiality, integrity and accessibility to health plan data.
