Join us to learn about the new offerings provided by First Health, the Alliance’s newest organization participating in our Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) program.  First Health has an established track record helping independent health plans expand their provider network footprints and enhance their competitive positions.

The new GPO contract with First Health leverages the purchasing power of our more than 45 health plan members to offer preferred access, fees and service enhancements.  As a result, Alliance members may see immediate advantages, including a unique “no access fees” offer for 2020 for new customers.  

As participation in the GPO contract grows and new Alliance members sign on, fees will be reduced further for all health plans.  First Health has committed to a national account, elevated service protocols and will sponsor a user group to address common out of network claims cost challenges.  First Health will also support the Alliance’s ongoing out of network claims cost containment initiatives including reciprocity among Alliance health plan members.

The Alliance undertook a rigorous RFP process that included proposals from three prominent national networks, including Multiplan, our GPO partner for many years.  The RFP included data from 22 Alliance health plans with over $2 billion in out of network (OON) claims that were repriced.  Our analysis determined that many plans could benefit from the First Health network and that the GPO maximized its leverage in choosing one partner.

A working committee of interested Alliance member plans guided the RFP process.  Their input made it clear that beyond current network discounts, forward looking provider contracting efforts as well as overall service provided to health plans were important criteria in selecting an OON partner.  The ultimate decision to go with First Health was made by our Executive Committee and Board.  They, and the Alliance staff, are confident that the GPO will generate advantages to Alliance members for years to come.
