What do you do when you know what you need to do, but you don’t have access to the supplies and resources you need? This is where we all found ourselves at the beginning of 2020, with the explosion of a global pandemic and a desperate scramble to equip and protect our patients and our health care workforce. The Veterans Health Administration’s 3D Printing Network (VHA 3DPN) recognized an opportunity and rose to the challenge.  What exactly can you do with a variety of 3D printing capabilities? If the usual supplies aren’t available, how might we leverage resources that we’ve never considered to design, test, and produce the supplies we desperately need? Most importantly, how might we do this together so that we can share what we learn as we learn it.  Enter a nationwide collaboration between FDA, NIH, and VA to provide an open-source platform to help launch a powerful response, alongside partner America Makes, who played the role of Matchmaker between health care systems in need and the 3D printing industry partners who could make supplies.
