Manager Underwriting

Job Summary / Impact:

Responsible for developing and implementing underwriting and rating policies, rating records and new and renewal group activities. Supervises Receptionist, Assistant Underwriter, Department Assistant and other clerical support.

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions:

• Develop and manage underwriting and rating policies and procedures for application to new and renewal accounts for the HMO, Insurance Company and new business products.
• Develop and manage procedures for the implementation and administration of new accounts, renewal business and new business products for HMO and Insurance Company products.
• Develop reports and associated procedures to evaluate results of benefit plans by type, employer location, broker, and affiliation to rating entity, renewal data and credibility of rating factors for all product lines.
• Develop and manage quoting procedures for generating proposals and responding to Request For Proposals and Request For Information documents.
• Develop, implement and administer personnel and office administration practices and procedures.
• Select, assign, train, conduct orientation sessions, evaluate subordinate personnel, and recommend associated personnel actions. Perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Knowledge / Skill / Ability

• Ability to develop and implement underwriting and corporate rating policies and procedures.
• Proficiency in developing procedures for underwriting including the preparation of Request for Proposals and Request for Information documents.
• Skill and proficiency in the use of automated reporting procedures including query, spreadsheet and word processing applications on personal computer.
• Ability to effectively lead, direct and supervise others.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Successful completion of Health Care Sanctions background check.
• Must have a current driver license and insurance verification.
• Ability to converse and write fluently in English.

Equivalent Education / Experience

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuary and Business Finance or a related discipline.
• At least 8 years of progressively responsible Group Health Underwriting experience.
• Related experience in a managed care operation preferred.
• Supervisory experience required.
