VP and CFO

As a member of the SelectHealth executive team, this position is responsible for leading his/her respective functional area(s) as well as working together to assure overall organizational performance and achieve company goals (approved by the CEO and Board of Trustees). The vice president participates in strategic planning, decision-making, establishing short and long range goals, objectives and plans, and in the development and implementation of company policies and procedures.


This position is responsible for financial planning, reporting and maintaining the financial health of SelectHealth and its subsidiaries. In addition, the CFO and VP:


Determines the financial impact to SelectHealth of all business decisions including the introduction of new products, lines of business or other business development opportunities, and changes in provider risk arrangements.
Assures that financial resources are available to meet strategic goals.
Oversees financial policies as they related to underwriting, accounting, finance, actuarial services, auditing, information systems, government, compliance, regulatory requirements, and internal reporting.
Applies actuarial and underwriting principles to the design and financial management of healthcare benefit programs and to the development of alternate health care financing systems.
Champions the integration of the SelectHealth financial systems and goals with Intermountain strategies.
Compiles and monitors a comprehensive financial forecast, capital and operating budget, including explaining variances from budget and developing effective actions to address shortfalls or unexpected variances.
This position is also responsible to inform and provide guidance to the SelectHealth Board of Directors and Intermountain Healthcare leadership team regarding financial issues, developments and recommendations.
Uses financial information as a means to identify solutions to problems and opportunities to pursue.
Maintains a full understanding of the business, its unique financial models, and remains alter to trends and future federal and state policies as they relate to changes with might impact the business.

Reports to CEO and is a member of the SelectHealth Executive Team
Indirect reporting relationship to the Intermountain Vice President of Finance
Annual revenue in excess of $3 billion
Total Enrollment: Greater than 850,000 members
Direct Reports: 3
Indirect Reports: 250
Responsible for sound internal control over financial reporting

Essential Job Duties

1) Leadership and Staff Development

a) Practices leadership core competencies as defined as Intermountain Healthcare as Senior Leader Core Competencies. b) Accurately assesses staff and leadership performance and aligns rewards with outcomes. Prioritizes opportunities to develop employees at all levels thereby sustaining SelectHealth culture which encourages transparency, collaboration, and an atmosphere where all employees feel respected and valued.


2) Resource Management

a) Practices and role models the effective and efficient use of company resources to meet strategic and operational objectives.

b) Supports use of standardized Continuous Improvement tools and methodologies to achieve high value performance in all functional areas within scope of position.

c) Coordinates with Finance and Human Resources in managing resources and meeting both departmental and company-wide operating budgets.

d) Oversees the management of financial and regulatory reporting, financial analysis, audit coordination and general ledger functions for all SelectHealth products. Oversees and improves consolidated finance operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax coordination and fixed asset preparation.

e) Oversees the management of medical cost reporting and analysis for all SelectHealth managed care products. Provides strategic direction for all actuarial and underwriting risk models and provides regular reports to senior management on SelectHealth's financial performance.

f) Ensures SelectHealth finance functions comply with Intermountain Healthcare policies and procedures and meet all regulatory requirements regarding financial operations.

g) Works with the executive team and Intermountain Healthcare finance to develop long-term financial strategy for SelectHealth. Develops financial projections that reflect SelecHealth's long-term plans. Reviews new strategies and the financial impact projected for each key strategy.

h) Develops, enhances, and implements systems of internal controls to achieve business objectives, including safeguarding SelectHealth and Intermountain Healthcare resources and providing timely and accurate financial reporting to various constituencies.


3) Key Partnerships

a) Builds and maintains effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders, including, but not limited to, employers, plan members, brokers, providers, system leaders, board members, other healthcare organizations, government and regulatory bodies and others in the community.

b) Works closely and collaboratively with all SelectHealth leaders and leaders across the delivery system to optimize both system and health plan performance.

c) Collaborates with other leaders across Intermountain and helps facilitate seamless integration of financial arrangements with Intermountain hospitals, Medical Group, and SelectHealth by maintaining cross-divisional decision-making and relationships.


4) Business Development

a) Works to identify new business opportunities for SelectHealth and works with appropriate team(s) to develop business plans to implement approved strategies.

b) Directs business development opportunities including mergers, acquisitions, non-traditional market alliances, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification required. MBA obtained through an accredited organization is a plus.
Ten (10) years of successful financial management experience
Five (5) years successful executive level leadership experience
Demonstrated track record of effective leadership and accomplishment.
Demonstrated expertise in financial analysis and the ability to solve complex analytical problems.
Strong technical accounting and reporting skills with ability to summarize and present in a way that “makes the numbers tell a story”, particularly to non-financial audiences.
Demonstrated effectiveness with financial and medical expense management.
Demonstrated record of building and maintaining effective internal and external relationships.
Relevant experience across multiple lines in managed care or health insurance industry.
Working knowledge of underwriting and actuarial services.
Advanced organizational "systems thinking" and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to understand and manage complex issues with ability to make difficult decisions when necessary.
Demonstrated advanced communication and interpersonal skills. Able to convey complex information in a confident, clear, concise, and compelling way.
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with coworkers and other constituents, including but not limited to providers, brokers, employers, plan members, representatives/ executives from other healthcare entities, government and regulatory bodies and others in the community.
