Alliance member health plans across the country are all working on developing a whole-person approach that integrates behavioral health services into the primary care model.  In this case study, Community Health Plan of Washington and University of Washington share lessons learned from a recent trial and what they plan on carrying forward from the study.

The CHPW team of presenters will share an overview of the Study to Promote Innovation in Rural Integrated Telepsychiatry (SPIRIT) trial. The project's research identified approaches to help primary care providers treat patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder through a collaborative care model or direct-to-patient telemedicine.  The study also made recommendations to state medical schools and qualified health centers about how to overcome existing barriers, and suggested policy changes that would mitigate the impact of these barriers. The SPIRIT trial was recognized by the Journal of Rural Health as the subject of the 2018 Article of the Year.  CHPW presenters provide the background on the PCORI grant (the SPIRIT Study), explain how they engaged with the University of Washington, and share the learnings that drove the recommendations made in the paper.
