Medicare Advantage Product Design & Implementation

Event Date: 2/10/2020 - 2/11/2020

Event Overview

The initial excitement of flexible benefit options is behind us now.  Results of the CMMI demos are now available, and the implementation challenges of non-clinical interventions, micro-segmentation and products designed to change behavior are front and center.  Medicare Advantage (MA) leaders from Alliance plans across the country convene to share lessons learned and get Alliance colleagues’ feedback on their latest MA challenges and ideas. Hear how Alliance members are differentiating themselves in their markets, driving MA growth, and supporting the organization’s goals for quality, advanced payment models, and population health.

Event Highlights

  • HOT OFF THE PRESS
Deft Research shares their 2020 AEP Study Results with Alliance members.  Special focus is given to benefit design and how supplemental benefits offered influenced shopping and switching behavior among seniors.

  • WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD
How can your plan clearly communicate these benefits when you go to market? At every step of the enrollment process, you risk confusing your potential members and creating dissatisfaction. In this session, we focus on how these “smart” benefits can be thoughtfully translated to intelligent sales and marketing strategies.

  • SMALL GROUP BREAK OUTS – CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!
Whether you need a deeper dive into DSNPs or DSNP-look alikes, want to compare notes on benefit administration mine fields, or are seriously exploring VBID and want to hear from others doing the same thing, these focused, facilitated discussion groups give you an opportunity to get the 411 on the hot button issue your team is focused on most.

Consider joining this MA benefit design study

Alliance friends Mike Adelberg (former director of Medicare Advantage Operations at CMS, now at Faegre Baker Daniels) and Tim Murray (a senior Medicare Advantage actuary at Wakely Consulting), are again putting together a coalition of health plans interested in innovating their products and embracing the new Medicare Advantage benefit flexibilities.

In 2019, the Alliance sponsored a coalition of 23 member health plans to form the MASBC project. This year, Mike and Tim are assembling a smaller and more participatory coalition that will offer plans a variety of new services, including:

  • Each participating plan will select one or more benefit scenario that it wishes have actuarially modeled and supported with compliance/implementation tips

  • Wakely will draft a memo, in consultation with the plan’s actuary (if willing/interested), that will evaluate and project, assuming sufficient data availability (and/or academic studies), utilization savings that the benefit can potentially deliver – potentially permitting utilization savings to be built into the plan’s bids (potentially offsetting the cost of these additional benefits)

  • Participating plans will also have access to:
    • a rapidly growing database of benefit innovation publications (nearly 200 publications as of today) for identifying best practices and informing decision making
    • a list of vendors currently providing innovative benefits and services to MA plans
    • a customized report on MA plan use of requested benefits (plans offering the benefit, use of cost sharing and utilization controls, linkages to chronic conditions, etc.)

If interested in learning more, contact Kristin Rodriguez for an introduction to the project leads.
