Meet your IIA External Assessments Requirement

Use this list of volunteers to find an independent reviewer or an external assessment team

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards) requires a quality assurance and improvement program (Program) covering all aspects of the internal audit activity.

IIA Standard 1321 states, “Indicating that the internal audit activity conforms with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing is appropriate only if supported by the results of the quality assurance and improvement program.” As part of the program requirements, IIA Standard 1312 states, “External assessments must be conducted at least once every five years by a qualified, independent assessor or assessment team from outside the organization.”

To assist our members in complying with the external assessments required by IIA Standards, the Association for Healthcare Internal Auditors (AHIA) and Health Plan Alliance (HPA) have partnered to develop an online directory of independent reviewer a/or external assessment team volunteers.

This list is maintained and provided as a member service.  Please note that neither the AHIA nor HPA controls, recommends, certifies, or endorses any individual listed.

The IIA Standard 1312 Implementation Guide states: “The chief audit executive uses professional judgment when assessing whether an assessor or assessment team demonstrates sufficient competence to be qualified.”

Likewise, neither AHIA nor HPA has any control nor takes any responsibility for any work performed by the peer reviewers or any issues arising between the peer reviewers and the organizations being reviewed.

To prevent misunderstandings, we recommend that all responsibilities of the peer reviewer and the organization being reviewed be spelled out clearly in writing before any commitment is made.

The IIA has several resources to help guide an organization in conformance with the Standard. We suggest that the organization being reviewed refer to the IIA resources for guidance.
