Alliance Book Club Pilot Session: Avera Health Plans on the 4 Disciplines of Execution

Event Date: 5/5/2021

Event Overview

Wednesday, 5/5/2021
2:00 PM CT – 3:30 PM CT (90 minutes)
Hosted by: Avera Health Plans

If you've heard the adage that those who read more earn more, then join us for the pilot series kick-off of the Alliance book club*, a networking and learning forum for Alliance health plan leaders. Whether you’re a seasoned executive or an up-and-coming leader, this forum encourages you to challenge your thinking while connecting with, learning from, and supporting your Alliance colleagues.

The May 5th kick-off features Avera Health Plans, and we welcome Sara Hansen, director of quality and clinical risk, back to the stage.  She is joined by her colleague Luke Merkel, director of pharmacy services. Together, they will lead an exploration of our first book: The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling. Sara introduced the Alliance membership to 4DX during her recent case study on how Avera implemented the approach and saw a $1.2M impact on their business. Fast Company says that applying the 4DX and “focusing on a wildly important goal (WIG) is like punching one finger through a sheet of paper – all your strength goes into making that hole.” Avera’s quality and clinical risk services team’s experience certainly makes one think there is something to this 4DX thing.

This virtual event is part book club, part real-world application, and part networking.  (READ: Audience participation is required!)
We’ve scheduled 90 minutes together, and it will be fast-paced and fun:

  • Hear Sara and Luke’s perspective on the book and how it felt to take the concepts and apply them in the real world of a fast-paced health plan!
  • Participate via lightning chat prompts and audience polls as we grapple with the book’s concepts – what are the barriers to trying this approach, and what ideas do we have to overcome them?
  • Engage directly with your peers in small discussion groups: Dig deeper into your reactions to the book, and embrace curiosity while listening to others’ perspectives

Pre-WORK! (Yep, we’re serious about this book club thing):

  1. Buy or borrow your copy of The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling
  2. Read the book before May 5
  3. Download the discussion guide and make notes as you go
  4. Run a BigMarker system check on your computer to make sure your technology setup is ready for full participation
