Maternity Health Mini-Series: Avera Health’s Gestational Diabetes Program

Event Date: 10/21/2021

Event Overview

Thursday, 10/21/2021
1:00 PM CT – 2:00 PM CT (60 minutes)
Hosted by: Avera Health Plan

Kimberlee McKay, MD, is an OB/GYN and Clinical Vice President at Avera Health, and she is on a mission to “save all the moms and all the babies.” Avera serves a 72,000-square-mile territory across South Dakota and neighboring states, with one tertiary care center in Sioux Falls and 15 small hospitals in a rural setting.

Avera’s patients often face a compounded risk to pregnancy due to health issues and a myriad of hurdles outside their (and Avera’s) control, like food insecurity, lack of transportation, and poverty. Dr. McKay and Avera Health are a part of a new collaboration led by the Office on Women’s Health at the Department of Health and Human Services that is taking a data-first approach to better understanding care delivery and outcomes and reduce the shockingly high rate of complications and deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth in the U.S.

During this session, Dr. McKay will share her perspective on the challenges she and OB/GYNs across the country are seeing in the patient setting, how health plan leaders can help be a part of the innovation and problem-solving equation, and then will dive deep into the work she and Avera Health Plans are doing together to address gestational diabetes.

This session is part of a five-part Maternity Health Mini Series. Register below for the rest of the series!
