Alliance Book Club Pilot Session 2: MetroPlusHealth on Trying Hard Is Not Good Enough

Event Date: 6/23/2021

Event Overview

Wednesday, 6/23/2021
2:30 PM CT – 4:00 PM CT (90 minutes)
Hosted by: MetroPlusHealth

If you've heard the adage that those who read more earn more, then join us for session 2 of the HPA book club* pilot series, a networking and learning forum for Alliance health plan leaders. Whether you’re a seasoned executive or an up-and-coming leader, this forum encourages you to challenge your thinking while connecting with, learning from and supporting your Alliance colleagues.

The May 25 session features MetroPlusHealth CEO Dr. Talya Schwartz.  She leads an exploration of the book: Trying Hard Is Not Good Enough, by Mark Friedman.   In this book, readers learn about Results-Based Accountability™: a framework for getting from talk to action quickly and making a difference, not just trying hard and hoping for the best. It has been used in over 40 US states and seven countries. Friedman provides practical methods for taking action together that are simple and common sense, use plain language, produce minimum paper, and are actually useful to public sector managers, community members, and decision-makers.

This framework can be used to improve the quality of life in communities. It can help government and private sector agencies improve the performance of their programs and make them more customer-friendly and effective. Results-Based Accountability™ is a common sense approach that replaces all the complicated jargon-laden methods foisted on us in the past and the methods can be learned and applied quickly. In addition to presenting practical methods, this book is also makes a clear distinction between population and performance accountability. While public and private organizations bear responsibility for their own performance, no organization can claim ownership of the well-being of a whole population. Population accountability is not an extension of performance accountability but a separate, and perpetually unfinished, collective enterprise. The book clearly and completely explains the differences and connections between these two forms of accountability.

The Results-Based Accountability™ progression of thought from results to experience, measures, baselines, story, partners, what works and action can be applied to any population challenge from the highest level consideration of world peace to the economic prosperity of nations and states to the safety of children in a particular community. The same thought progression can be applied to any performance accountability challenge from the management of whole governments to large public and private sector agencies to the smallest program and finally to our personal lives. Results-Based Accountability™ may be the only planning framework of this scope.

This virtual event is part book club, part real-world application, and part networking.  (READ: Audience participation is Required!)

We’ve scheduled 90 minutes together and it will be fast-paced and fun:

  • Hear Talya’s perspective on the book and how it felt to take the concepts and apply them in the real world of a fast-paced health plan!
  • Participate via lightning chat prompts and audience polls as we grapple with the book’s concepts – what are the barriers to trying this approach and what ideas do we have to overcome them?
  • Engage directly with your peers in small discussion groups: Dig deeper into your reactions to the book, and embrace curiosity while listening to others’ perspectives

Pre-WORK! (Yep, we’re serious about this book club thing):

  1. Buy or borrow your copy of Trying Hard Is Not Good Enough, by Mark Friedman
  2. Read the book before May 25
  3. Download the discussion guide (coming soon!) and make notes as you go
  4. RUN A SYSTEM CHECK on your computer to make sure your technology setup is ready for full participation
