It’s not new for health plan quality or care management team members to be “working the phones,” reaching out directly to beneficiaries to encourage enrollment in chronic care management programs, or to encourage individuals to engage directly in their health care to close gaps and improve outcomes for the populations you serve. However, the results of such efforts can be discouraging.

In this case study, Avera Health Plans describes how their team uses a specific communication tool called “Motivational interviewing” to make these conversations more member-centric and productive. Avera leaders walk attendees through this evidence-based approach in this case study, identifying and strengthening individuals’ reasons to change behaviors. This goal-oriented communication style isn’t a way to “get people to change,” but instead is a framework that brings Avera team members closer to their members.

  • What are the unique ways motivational interviewing can support health plan team goals?
  • How can you train your team in motivational interviewing techniques?
  • A “primer” on motivational interviewing
