Chief Medical Officer

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island (NHPRI) seeks a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) with a track record of success as a trusted, performance-driven, collaborative physician leader. NHPRI is an innovative health plan in partnership with community health centers and secures access to high quality, cost-effective care for Rhode Island’s at-risk populations. The CMO will be responsible for championing quality, fostering clinical effectiveness, and implementing a culture of clinical excellence among the NHPRI members.

NHPRI was founded in December 1991 by the state’s 13 community health centers and the Rhode Island Health Center Association. Neighborhood is a 501c3 organization and network model serving one in six Rhode Island residents, totaling over 200,000 members. NHPRI was one of two organizations to be ranked a “Top 10 Medicaid Health Plan in America” every year for the eleven years NCQA generated rankings (2004-2014). While NCQA no longer ranks Plans, NHPRI continues to score among the very top in NCQA’s new rating system. In 2014, NHPRI achieved “Accredited” status for its commercial plans. In addition, NPRI earned the 2017 “Best Place to Work” Award from the Providence Business News, recognizing it as one of the best places to work in the Large Employer (150-499 employees) category.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CMO will oversee all medical and behavioral health management and clinical quality related activities of the plan, ensuring both coherency and consistency with NHPRI’s mission, vision, and values. The CMO will have six direct reports including: Medical Director; Director of Evaluation and Improvement; Director of Operations and Strategy; Director of Behavioral Health; Director of Pharmacy Services; Vice President of Medical Management.

The CMO supervises diverse functional groups which include approximately 200 staff and will provide leadership on cost containment savings initiatives, disease protocols, and staff guidance in the development and interpretation of medical policy and technology assessment. This person will chair and/or serve on various corporate and cross-department committees as well as be responsible for providing strategic guidance and support for all clinical initiatives serving the plan contracts.

As a member of the Executive Team, the CMO will be collaborative, and actively participate in developing and executing the strategic goals, objectives, and plans of the organization. The successful candidate will be an experienced physician with a proven track record of relationship building and a demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in setting and attaining quantifiable goals.

The successful candidate will have: an MD or DO, with board certification in his/her specialty, with current, or ability to obtain, RI license; Master’s in Public Health, Management or Business preferred, but not required; Recent CMO or Medical Director experience, preferably in a Health Plan. Leadership experience in improving access, delivering high quality cost effective care and in developing innovative programs for high-risk populations is ideal.
